Edge & Node is looking for research interns to join the data science team to work on exploratory projects that advance the use of on-chain data from The Graph to power more complex decentralized applications and use cases, as well as to take advantage of the unique opportunity of open access to transaction level data to inform cutting edge research in computational social science. The goal is that this internship would result in co-authored work to be submitted to high profile conferences or academic journals in the intern’s respective field, as well as a working proof of concept of how this data could be used in novel web3 applications.
The company is open to project ideas based on the intern’s research interests and skills. Example projects of interest include:
• Building DAO or token recommendation algorithms based on global and user wallet activity
• Building a prototype of web3 search or feed ranking algorithms based on user preferences
• Building empirical or agent-based models of how agents respond to changes in protocol economics and incentive mechanisms
• Empirical analysis of how community sentiment and events relate to on-chain behaviors
• Network analysis of DAO communities, their overlap, and internal social dynamics
• Anomaly detection services based on relevant on-chain network behaviors to enhance protocol security or identify emerging sectors
• Empirical or agent based models to better understand and estimate systemic and counterparty risks
Responsibilities
Use existing subgraph data to develop open-source models of ecosystem activity that can be used to deliver novel insights and user experiences
Work with software, data engineers and data scientists to develop open-source proof of concept application that uses data to power novel use case
Use subgraph data to co-author research paper with internal and external collaborators
Explore and establish best practices for the responsible use of blockchain data to advance research in the student’s discipline
Desired skills
Pursuing graduate degree in quantitative field (computer science, statistics, operations research, economics, computational social sciences, etc.)
Experience using SQL to manipulate and analyze complex, large-scale datasets in a cloud computing environment
Experience in statistical modeling of user behavior using at least one programming language (Python, R, Scala, Julia, Rust, etc.)
Experience in working with external contributors and community members. We collaborate and interact with our growing community of developers and indexers every day. A high quality bar, attention to detail and excellent communication skills are key aspects in how we work.
Strong sense of ownership. We trust everyone on the team a great deal. A big part of that is that our engineers own the topics they work on, raise issues early and see implementations through from start to finish.
Familiarity with web3 and cryptocurrency web applications as a user or contributor
Knowledge of and experience using off-chain data that would be relevant to research questions of interest
Preferred Experience
Working knowledge of and ability to contribute to state of the art research in machine learning, natural language processing, computational social science or data mining with track record of producing published work in journals or conference proceedings
About The Team
Edge & Node is a globally distributed team. We work hard, but our remote-first team affords a high degree of autonomy and flexibility. Our few scheduled meetings tend to be in the morning, pacific standard time (PST).
We’re mission-oriented and hold one another accountable with results rather than vanity metrics like time spent at your desk. We trust you to use your time effectively if you need to book a vacation, make a doctor’s appointment, go for a run, or even get some fresh air.
You can expect off-sites in different parts of the world, where we strategize as a team, brainstorm around a whiteboard, go on team outings, have spirited and varied conversations over wine, coffee, or kombucha, and get to know each other on a personal level. In addition to off-sites, you’ll have the option to travel to conferences and meetups worldwide, where you’ll get to know individual teammates on a more personal level and build relationships with our users and community.
We value diversity and bringing your whole self to work, including your weird hobbies, unique life experiences, cultural traditions, obscure music tastes, and whatever else makes you you.
We pay a competitive stipend to all selected interns based on experience and country of residence, and offer generous health benefits to U.S. based employees.
